2011 in Review

2011 was a little different then the previous few years.  I picked up cross country skiing and really cranked up the running while my swimming and cycling took a bit of a hit.  I also took on a range of new events and placed for the first time in both a road race and a triathlon (and then again in triathlon relay).

Volume
With tomorrow's run I will have reached 1266 miles on the year, just a mere 62% increase from last year's 780 miles.  Included in this were 2 runs > 30 miles, 5 > 20 miles, and a bunch in the teens.  My longest run previous to 2011 was 13.5.  After tomorrow's run, it will be the 1st time I have run 150 miles within a month.  Cycling dropped down to 1468 miles from 2000+ over the last few years, while swimming took the biggest hit dropping down to 130K (from 300K last year).  I also knocked out just over 100 miles on my skate skies (CC skiing) and truly fell in love with the sport.  In summary, I worked out 392 times for: 2936 miles, 369 hours, 96,250 ft of climbing, and burned over 225K calories.  To put it in perspective, I was 100 miles short of reaching San Francisco (swim, bike, run, ski, and hiking) and could have ran all the way to Orlando.

Races
Over the course of 2011, I raced 17 times (up from 14 in 2010) and the races consisted of a lot of firsts: winter triathlon, 50K trail run, 200 mile team relay run, and 1st and longest open water swim.  It was also a year of placements (mostly new to me): Crooms Fool's 50K I took 3rd overall and 1st in AG, took 3rd in my AG at the Appleman Triathlon, Amy and I took 1st mixed relay at the Sharon triathlon, and my master's swim team (Minuteman) took 1st at the NEM SCM Championship.  Finally, I set a new personal record in the half marathon distance in Hyannis last February knocking out a 1:27:42 (3:40 faster then my previous one).  All and all a quite good year.

States
In addition to my 17 races, I knocked off 3 more states this calendar year: Florida, Maine, and Washington and in style no less with a 50K run, 3K swim, and 10 mile trail run respectively.  This brings me to 12 with just a mere 38 to go.

What's Next
2012 is going to be an interesting year.  If it ever snows around here then I will jump head first in to cross country skiing again.  My main goal for the first half of the year is to complete my first marathon and qualify for the Boston Marathon (2013 edition).  This may be the most aggressive goal I have set to date, but as writer and futurist Alvin Toffler puts it, "It is better to err on the side of daring than the side of caution." Post marathon, who knows.  I plan on getting back into triathlons and have even floated the idea of doing a 50 mile trail run.  At this point I am going to leave it wide open.

I'm tired just thinking about all that working out ;-). Maybe next year you could check off Oregon or Idaho if they're still on your list. Would be great to see you guys in 2012 and all the best for a great next year!
